A number of Toronto’s best designed private homes and condos are featured in a new book that gives a snapshot of some of the city’s important buildings.

Toronto has undergone “a dramatic architectural transformation” over the last 15 years, says husband-and-wife team Margaret and Phil Goodfellow, authors of A Guidebook to Contemporary Architecture in Toronto. (Douglas & McIntyre; $24.95). “Design excellence has been a key factor in this building boom.”

The pocket-size book groups projects by neighbourhood, from Scarborough in the east to Mississauga in the west, and identifies public transit options to get to each one.

High-profile developments such as the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal at the Royal Ontario Museum and Frank Gehry’s transformation of the Art Gallery of Ontario are included, along with several much less familiar buildings.

Private homes, public buildings, parks, schools, libraries — all are given equal treatment, with one page of text opposite a page of photos.

In an essay included in the book, Shawn Micallef, a senior editor at Spacing magazine, points to neighbourhoods that are currently “hotbeds of culture and development” (Leslieville and the Junction), but predicts a movement to the city’s outskirts. In a few decades, he writes, “another volume on Toronto’s contemporary architecture will need to be published about the growing cultural strength of the suburbs.”
