– Ottawa is considering new rules that would force banks to use tougher criteria to evaluate mortgage borrowers, a move to ensure that consumers aren’t taking on more debt than they can handle when they buy a home.

– Loblaw Cos. Ltd. (L.TO) a trailblazer in low-cost private labels such as President’s Choice, is testing an array of new discount store brands aimed at attracting more shoppers and fending off a legion of new players in the grocery business.

– Air Canada (ACa.TO) is aiming to lure corporate customers by adding 74 new daily flights in a crucial battleground while trying to thwart fast-growing Porter Airlines Inc.’s expansion plans.


– Former head of the Bank of Canada David Dodge has jumped into the debate over the housing market, warning that prices have reached a point where they are almost unsustainable.

– The Canadian Real Estate Association will ask its members to bow to the demands of the Competition Bureau of Canada and allow easier and possibly cheaper access to its Multiple Listing Service.

– The national telecommunications watchdog said it may begin regulating the wireless sector in a rare report being called a new “policy manifesto” for the future of the industry. Yet some of the sector’s biggest players say the report signals an entrenchment of outdated rules.
