REFILE-PRESS DIGEST – Canada – Jan 12 | Reuters

Jan 12 (Reuters) – The following are top stories from selected Canadian newspapers. Reuters has not verified these stories and does not vouch for their accuracy.

– Transport Canada has put all airlines and carriers on high alert, warning them to exercise “increased vigilance.” The message came late Saturday after Canada received credible intelligence of a potential terrorist threat.

– The Conservative government is warning that Canada’s economic recovery is in a fragile state as a spiking dollar combines with protectionist U.S. polices to create a flat-lining job market.

– Prime Minister Stephen Harper will announce $13-million in federal funding for an environmental project in Quebec after being the target of vocal criticism by Premier Jean Charest during last month’s international conference on climate change in Copenhagen.

– Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty is poised to lose another senior member of his cabinet, with the widely expected announcement today that Jim Watson will make the jump to municipal politics.

– Tapping into populist outrage over the financial crisis and Wall Street bonuses, the White House is selling a controversial plan to slap a fee on banks to ensure they shoulder the full cost of massive financial bailouts and help tackle record U.S. deficits.

– Tax collectors and the Bank of Nova Scotia (BNS.TO) are locking horns in federal court over access to the names of investors – including “six prominent Canadian business families” – behind a $1.1-billion offshore investment fund.

– The Bank of Canada Monday dismissed talk of a housing bubble in Canada as “premature,” warning that calls for higher interest rates now in an effort to temper real-estate markets would be akin to “dousing” the economic recovery with cold water.
